By integrating accessibility into our designs, we expand our reach to a broader audience, including individuals with disabilities. But it doesn’t stop there — accessibility features often enhance the overall user experience, making our sites more intuitive and user-friendly for everyone. Navigating the WCAG guidelines

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide a roadmap for creating accessible content based on four key principles:

  • Perceivable: Ensure that information and UI components are accessible to all senses.

  • Operable: Guarantee that all functionality is available via keyboard and provide users ample time to interact with content.

  • Understandable: Keep text clear, readable, and predictable.

  • Robust: Ensure compatibility with current and future technologies, including assistive devices.

Semantic HTML

Writing semantically is the cornerstone of accessible web development, ensuring the appropriate use of HTML tags for their intended purposes. This practice enhances compatibility with screen readers, providing meaningful context to assistive technologies, and improves SEO by helping search engines understand content better.

To facilitate keyboard navigation, ensure all interactive elements are focusable, manage focus order with the tabindex attribute, and provide visible focus indicators (preferably focus-visible over focus). Additionally, correctly using ARIA attributes can enhance accessibility, but remember that ARIA should complement, not replace, semantic HTML. In fact, its incorrect usage can inadvertently hinder accessibility.

Building components

When creating design systems, it's vital to bake accessibility into the process from the outset. Develop systems and tools that help other developers maintain a baseline of accessibility.

For example, consider a Field component that automatically includes essential attributes like id, for, aria-describedby, and aria-errormessage, ensuring all necessary elements are connected and described for assistive technology.

Testing for accessibility

Utilise tools like Axe and Lighthouse to quickly pinpoint common accessibility issues, providing a solid foundation for your work. However, manual testing remains crucial. Use screen readers and keyboard navigation to assess the user experience, as these methods can reveal problems that automated tools might overlook.

If possible, engage users with disabilities for feedback; their insights are invaluable and can lead to more inclusive design solutions.
